From daughters to soldiers, from wives to guns, they remain the only documented front-line troops in the history of modern warfare. ____________________ Ending finalists who left their European settlers trembling in their boots, foreign observers called them the Dahomean Amazons while they called themselves N'Nonmiton, (our mothers in FON). Protecting their king on the bloodiest battlefields, they emerged as an elite fighting force in the Kingdom of Dahomey, the present Republic of Benin. Described as untouchable, vowed as a virgin, rapid decapitation was his trademark. ____________________ The last survivor of the N'Nonmiton died at age 100 in 1979. They were consistently judged superior to male soldiers in efficacy and bravery. The records suggest that there were about 600 women in the army of Dahomey from 1760 to the 1840s, in which King Gezo expanded the body to as many as 6,000. These women have distinguished themselves in the history of Africa as being a symbol of courage!

History teaches us that this style of braid has an African origin. The braid style in the past indicated your tribe. Particularly since the 19th century in Ethiopia kings and warriors were identified by the style of their braids. _______________ Modernity and sometimes lack of information or neglect causes people to refer to the cornrows as being "Boxer Braids", "KKW Braids" (Kim Khardashian West), "Alicia Keys Braids". Harmless as it may seem, such names obfuscate every trick of this braided story for centuries. _______________ All in all, this does not imply that cornrows are only for black women, since fashion and hair are integrated. We are all in one way or another inspired by the art of others, important in this process is making your inspiration remarkable. In this way we will be able to maintain the thin line between fashion and the "offensive". |
